If we are patient and observant, we may be lucky enough to occasionally witness those who practice true courage. I am speaking, of course, of those for whom “choice” means life or death, self-sacrifice, taking risks that the rest of us only see in movies or read about in books. Have you ever seen someone steel themselves against inevitable pain, suffering and even perhaps death, or the possibility thereof, and still take their stand, draw their line, speak their truth, take an action, or express their love despite the consequences?

“How well we live depends not only on how bravely we choose, but how well we live with the consequences of the choices we make” are words born from experience, and reflection. They are words that ring true in my core.

I have made many hard choices in my life. Some I would make differently today, most I would not. I never had the opportunity to travel abroad or take time away from work, family, school, responsibilities, to contemplate much. But I know the meaning of courage, of integrity, and, of love.

Courage is love in action. Any time we act courageously we inevitably are demonstrating love for ourselves, others, and the universe as a whole. Courage reminds us of our true nature, despite our fears, instincts and reactions. Courage is devoid of arrogance or selfishness – it interacts with our higher nature and seeks righteousness, not to be confused with self-righteousness.

We may make poor choices, we may act courageously on issues that, in the end, don’t have the result we seek. But we can never go wrong when we choose kindness, integrity and love because those choices eliminate fear and lead us to ourselves, others, and the universe. And that, my friend, that is all there is.

    • Mmmm… an extraordinarily insightful comment, Vena.

      “Courage is love in action.”

Beautiful…and for a moment…confusing. Until you remind me, of course, love of self. I wonder, isn’t that the most the most difficult love to acquire?

“we can never go wrong when we choose kindness, integrity and love”

And isn’t it these that give us the courage to act?

I think I’m not done with “courage” yet…
